About Hyperestrogen Syndrome
Hyperestrogen Syndrome or HES is a new term that encompasses several hormonal imbalances throughout a woman's lifetime, including:
- PMS/Premenstrual Syndrome and PMDD/Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (severe PMS)
- Postpartum depression, which can occur after any pregnancy, even miscarriages and abortions
- Perimenopausal and menopausal mood swings
- Adverse reactions to birth control pills/hormone replacement therapy
HES is not limited to psychological symptoms only. It also encompasses physical symptoms such as:
- Headaches/Migraines
- Acne
- Breast pain
- Bloating/constipation
- Unusual weight gain
- Diminished or absent sexual response
A researcher named Dr. Guy Abraham discovered all this back in 1980! Dr. Abraham is a Reproductive Endocrinologist and a PhD in Nutrition. He was formerly a professor of ObGyn at UCLA Medical School. With his background in Gynecology, Endocrinology (hormone imbalances), and Nutrition; he was concerned about all the hormonal problems women were having. He knew that most MD's treated these problems by giving women more hormones: birth control pills and menopausal hormone pills.
Dr. Abraham felt that the hormonal problems were related to nutritional imbalances, specifically vitamin and mineral deficiencies. In his research he found that many women will begin to store estrogen in their fat tissue. As the estrogen levels build up, all the symptoms mentioned above begin to occur and then they worsen over time. However, when the proper levels of vitamins and minerals are given to these women, the liver is able to metabolize (flush out) the estrogen. Then the symptoms improve dramatically.
HES should not be ignored because it can lead to other health problems. Menstrual problems include:
- Irregular or skipped periods
- Heavy menstrual flow
- Large blood clots
- Severe cramping
- Anemia due to heavy bleeding
Excessive levels of estrogen, in women with HES, can cause an increase in these gynecological problems:
- Fibrocystic breast disease
- Frequent recurrences of pre-existing genital herpes, genital warts, cervical HPV or dysplasia
- Uterine fibroids
- Ovarian cysts
- Miscarriages
HES does not "cause" cancer. However, female cancers will grow faster in the presence of excessive estrogen:
- Breast cancer
- Vulvar/Vaginal cancer
- Cervical cancer
- Uterine cancer
- Ovarian cancer
There are several non-gynecological health problems that are also worsened by excessive estrogen levels:
- Obesity
- Blood clots
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
Based on the above information, it is easy to see how treating HES may help prevent four of the major causes of death in women: heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes.
